District 1 Commissioner Johnny Wilson demonstrates a commitment to supporting veterans in Henry County. As an active volunteer with American Legion Post 516 in McDonough, he has participated in initiatives such as constructing wheelchair-accessible ramps for veterans' homes and contributing to donation drives for disaster relief.
Since 2021, Commissioner Wilson has dedicated his time and skills to several projects focused on building wheelchair-accessible ramps. This vital work has enabled disabled veterans to return home and reunite with their families. He has also actively assisted the Post during its water drives for disaster relief, which involved collecting donations of bottled water and loading them onto tractor-trailers for distribution to areas affected by hurricanes, including Texas, Louisiana, and North Carolina.
Commissioner Wilson has garnered the endorsement of Vets to Vets, Inc., a Barnesville-based non-profit organization committed to assisting military veterans, for his re-election campaign.
Commissioner Wilson has backed Mighty Hero Homes' initiative to build tiny homes for homeless veterans in McDonough. The county approved a lease agreement in August 2023, allowing the organization to utilize county-owned property for this purpose. Mighty Hero Homes is currently engaged in fundraising efforts to support the construction.
Commissioner Wilson is also actively collaborating with a non-profit organization on a second veterans' tiny homes project in Locust Grove. This proposal, pending board approval, would similarly leverage county-owned property.
Commissioner Wilson has collaborated with regional partners to bring the Mobile Vet Center to Locust Grove. It will be in Locust Grove on Saturday, September 21, from 10 am to 2 pm. The Mobile Vet Center assists military veterans to learn more about and take advantage of the benefits available to them.
The Mobile Center will be next to the Locust Grove Veteran’s Memorial Park, 3644 Georgia 42 South, Locust Grove. Please help share the word with veterans in our community.
