County Commissioner for Henry County District 1
County Commissioner for Henry County District 1
Johnny has represented the people of Henry County District 1 since 2017. Now, he is asking for your support for four more years.
Before serving as county commissioner, Johnny served on the frontlines of our community. Johnny began his service as a volunteer with the Henry County Fire Department in 1977. He worked for the city of Riverdale from 1981 to 1990. Johnny finished his career working 23 years for Henry County Fire retiring in 2013.
Johnny and his wife, Donna, have been married for 44 years. They have three daughters & seven grandchildren.
Commissioner Wilson voted for the county to maintain a constant millage rate from 2017–2023. Coupled with the county’s frozen homestead exemption, this has saved homeowners millions of dollars on their county property taxes. This year, he was the only commissioner to vote against the county’s rate increase.
Commissioner Wilson has limited the growth in district 1 by requiring high-standards from developers. He has approved only three new subdivisions within the district during his eight years in office.
Commissioner Wilson believes in improving our roadway network. In SPLOST V, the commissioner set aside 100% of district 1 funds for transportation improvements. This amounted to $19.6 million.
Johnny followed this by securing $62 million in T-SPLOST. The funds will pay for the upcoming widening of Bill Gardner Parkway in Locust Grove, and state route 81 in Ola.
Commissioner Wilson demonstrates a commitment to supporting veterans in Henry County. As an active volunteer with American Legion Post 516 in McDonough, he has participated in initiatives such as constructing wheelchair-accessible ramps for veterans' homes and contributing to donation drives for disaster relief.
Johnny has the endorsement of Vets to Vets, Inc., a Barnesville-based non-profit organization committed to assisting military veterans, for his re-election campaign.
September 2024 – Thank you to everyone who stopped by our meet & greet at Town-N-Country. I appreciated the opportunity to discuss our community with residents and pass out yard signs.
September 2024 – The Mobile Vet Center was in Locust Grove on Saturday, September 21. I am incredibly thankful for the approximately twenty veterans we were able to help out with their benefits.
I hope to continue this partnership at future events.
July 2024 – I voted against raising the millage rate. The other commissioners’ decision to raise property taxes will not only affect all homeowners, but especially our seniors. Because seniors over the age of 70 are exempt from school taxes, they will not receive any benefit from the school board’s millage rate reduction. Instead, they will see the full impact of a three-mill increase on their tax bills. This situation applies to about 12,000 homeowners in Henry County.
July 2024 – This week, the Georgia Department of Transportation activated the new traffic signal on Highway 42 at Harris Drive. I am thankful to the state’s cooperation and approval so we could make this new signal a reality.
The new light should provide motorists with a safer turn and reduce delays when turning from Harris Drive onto highway 42.
May 2024 – I shared my concerns about the county budget during the board of commissioners meeting. We need to look for ways to cut county expenses, starting with the county commissioners’ budget, before raising property taxes.
May 2024 – Thank you to American Legion Post 516 and Commander Alton Head for the invite this week to assist building a ramp for a local veteran in Barnesville. Thank you as well to the other volunteers who joined us to complete the project this past Thursday.
It’s always an honor and privilege to support these projects helping our veterans.
